Description

On the 16th of July, at 9:32 in the morning, the gigantic Saturn V rocket left the launch pad at Cape Canaveral. It would become one of the defining voyages in human history. The rocket was over 110m tall and weighed in at 3000 tonnes. It could carry a payload of over 50t and reach a top speed of 11,2km/second. The 394.000km long trip to the moon took 72 hours.

After reaching a low orbit, the upper stage with the Apollo capsule separated from the launch vehicle and matched the Moon's orbit speed. Then the Apollo stage group separated from the rocket, rotated and set off towards the moon. After a number of orbits around the celestial body the lander, containing both astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin headed for the surface, while the command capsule carrying Michael Collins stayed behind.
