Description
3D printing of light-weight PLA parts
LW-PLA is the first filament of its kind to use active foam technology to create low weight and low-density PLA parts. At about 230 ° C, the material begins to foam and increases its volume almost three times.
Users can reduce material flow by 65% to achieve lighter weight parts, or use the expansion characteristics to effectively reduce printing time by using large layer heights or single extra-thick perimeters.
Active foam technology, how does it work?
The most important input variables for controlling the expansion are speed, temperature and flow. This allows users to vary the density of the material for different parts of the model.
ColorFabb uses the following 4-step process to determine the maximum extent at a given speed, temperature and flow.
- Print the cubes at a specified speed at temperatures between 200 ° C and 280 ° C
- Measure the circumference thickness of each cube and note the highest expansion temperature.
- Print a cube in increments of decreasing flow at the temperature specified in step 2.
- Choose the print where the circumferential thickness matches the nozzle size.
Up to 65% weight reduction.
Because of the expanding nature of the material, users can reduce flow while still printing dimensionally accurate models. Users can achieve a weight reduction of 65% compared to conventional PLA.
3D-Print more!
Decreasing flow means less filament. As a result, two to three times as many parts can be printed with LW-PLA as with a normal PLA spool.
Excellent surface quality.
LW-PLA prints in a fantastically matte surface and is very easy to rework.

I’ve been wanting to make an Eclipson printed aircraft for a while now but hadn’t had much luck with cheaper LW-PLA from China - just goes to show false economy is a thing. Was really pleased with the ColourFabb LW-PLA from 3DJake. The product just works. It doesn’t seem too fussy on settings and layer adhesion is good with no tendency to pull off my build plate (Artillery X1 with heated bed). Parts are really light and don’t seem to warp much, if at all. Highly recommended - make yourself some light weight parts where weight is critical. Don’t waste money on cheap filament when you can get the real deal from 3DJake.

My favourite filament

I have ordered several filaments from this website now and this one amazes me with every print. It is incredibly versatile with it's variable density and is actually "easy to print". You can print with layer heights of 32mm and achieve very smooth results, not to mention the texture is very nice. Thin parts can be incredibly robust and light, making it excellent for quick prototyping. This is aided by it's easy sand-ability.
Delivery was also very quick, and the price matches that of Colorfabb's own website.

Once dialled in, this is the best filament for RC planes, just wish it was a bit cheaper. Always use the white for RC Model Plane to reduce the risk of warping in the sun.

This may be more expensive than other lightweight PLA's but for me it's worth the extra. I experiment with Model Aircraft and find this works really well.

Easy to use as normal PLA , its true that you can print more with less filament since it has that foaming and expanding qualities with higher temperatures but I don’t like the fact that it comes as a 750g spool, for the same price its a shame that 3Djake doesn’t stock Esun LW-PLA.
